Nurse Psychotherapy Association of Ontario Updated Website, Member Portal and Launch of Registry

For over a year, the Nurse Psychotherapy Association of Ontario (NPO) has worked with our valued mentors and supporters of Nurse Psychotherapy to establish our voice at the table of stakeholders involved in the decision-making around access to counselling and psychotherapy for Ontarians. 

Our sincere thank you to the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO), specifically the historical and current work of the Mental Health Interest Group (MHIG) as they supported our work and mentored us in the complex nature of advocating for inclusion across all aspects of the delivery of counselling and psychotherapy in Ontario.

We couldn’t be here without the mentorship of the Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals (OAMHP). Their guidance and advocacy for nurse psychotherapists to be involved with stakeholders working together to break down barriers to accessing mental health care for Ontarians have been immeasurably helpful.

Finally, we would like to thank the Honourable Dr. Leigh Chapman, Minister Sylvia Jones and Minister Tibollo for their guidance, advice and quick, timely support in ensuring the legislation honouring nurse psychotherapists as valued professionals in counselling and psychotherapy work was adhered to in all the situations we have brought to their attention, with one small exception - the private insurance organizations who continue to not listen to legislators who repeatedly inform them of the legal obligation to honour the laws of Ontario and listen to the regulatory bodies whose job is to protect Ontarians.

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new website, member portal and the official launch of a registry for nurse psychotherapists which adheres to the requirements of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) for nurse psychotherapy practice and adds to it, the Standards of Practice created by the combined efforts of the Nurse Psychotherapy Association and the MHNIG.

We are pleased to support our members in their efforts to build community while simultaneously supporting the stakeholders' request for a registry that uses the CNO’s verification of nurse licensure and authority to practice and combines it with a commitment to Standards of Practice specific to Nursing Psychotherapy.
